Singapore celebrates World Maritime Day

SINGAPORE: Singapore celebrates on Thursday World Maritime Day which marks the eighth year that the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Singapore Maritime Officers' Union and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen distribute hampers to 600 ships.

About 12,000 seafarers will receive these hampers containing food, caps and movies in DVDs, among other items.

The hampers serve as small tokens of appreciation to the seafarers to show that their services are valued and they are supported by the maritime community.

This year's theme "Year of the Seafarer" is dedicated to seafarers to recognise their unique and important contributions to the global community.

At the hamper presentation ceremony held at the Maritime House, MPA chairman Lucien Wong presented hampers to some 30 representatives from the shipping industry.

Mr Wong said: "Seafarers are often out of touch with their families, friends and the wider world when out in the open sea.

"We recognise their many sacrifices and to show our appreciation to seafarers for their dedication, MPA, together with the local seafarer unions, have been presenting gift hampers to ships that call at our port every World Maritime Day since 2003."

To support the work of the missions, MPA chief executive Lam Yi Young presented a financial grant of S$100,000 to the four seafarer missions in Singapore.

They are the Mission to Seafarers, the Norwegian Seamen's Mission, the Danish Seamen's Church, and the Lutheran Seafarers' Mission.

The annual funding supports a wide range of welfare services for foreign seafarers, ranging from ship visitations to counselling services and pastoral care at the mission centres, when they arrive in Singapore.
